Traditional Piano

"I think music in itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music." Billy Joel

traditional_piano_1The Traditional approach of piano instruction does not start to teach the student by ear, like the Suzuki method does. It incorporates reading right away.
As a result – since reading is involved from early on – it requires the student to be at least 6 years of age, or older.

This might also mean that – because of the involvement of reading – the Traditional method could show a slower progress at the beginning than the “dive right into playing” Suzuki approach (teaching everything by ear for a while, making quick repertoire building possible).

Understandably, it takes some time to be able to do everything simultaneously – to establish the fundamentals of piano playing while learning to read, as well as learning the pieces by reading the notes, one by one.

However, this does not mean that learning to play the piano is “impossible” with this approach. No, not at all!
It only means that Traditional lessons are more suitable for older students, and maybe for those who are not absolute beginners, while the Suzuki method is designed for really young children. Therefore parental involvement in practicing or at the lessons is not that elemental than in the Suzuki method.

Also, the Traditional method usually means for the student to take only 1 private lesson a week. In some cases, depending on the student’s interest and schedule, two lessons a week can be taken, as well.
Remember – more practice means more progress!

This method does not offer group class (“Performance Class”) in its curriculum, as the Suzuki approach does.

A great advantage of the Traditional method though is the usage of a large and wide repertoire, offering endless possibilities for student and teacher to further perfect technique, style and expressivity.
